Thinking about Thinking

by kaeru last modified 2008-08-07 23:11

There are a few things I share often, which I thought were common stories, but unfortunately not that common.

Stone Soup

I use this example often to explain how facilitating FOSS communities is one way of getting people to start sharing.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_soup is one of them.

The Three Stone Cutters

This one is a good one to provide example of how differently people in a project can view their role:

Three stone cutters were asked about their jobs. The first said he was paid to cut stones. The second replied that he used special techniques to shape stones in an exceptional way, and proceeded to demonstrate his skills. The third stone cutter just smiled and said, "I build cathedrals."

The Programmers Stone

Finally, this one was shared by angch, which introduces the concept of packers and mappers that we use to simplify categorisation of why some people don't seem to be creative or improve themselves. The original articles is at the link below, but you can also explore the site for additional essays.
