MyOSS October 2008 Meetup - Ole Tange on the OpenMoko Mobile Phone
From foss.org.my: MyOSS October Meetup.
OpenMoko is the GNU/Linux distribution that runs on the free phone Neo Freerunner from FIC. It is completely Free Software. Being able to completely control a cell phone gives new possibilities that people only dreamed of.
The phone Neo Freerunner from FIC runs a completely free operating system. Because it is free it is possible try out completely new ideas - even ideas that the phone companies make no money from. The presentation will be about the possibilities and how you can take part in this revolution.
About the Speaker

Ole Tange has worked as Hostmaster for .dk, as a security consultant, as network admin, as site reliability engineer, and is now working as developer. He has worked with UNIX since 1991, GNU/Linux since 1992, and in 1996 he deleted his Microsoft Windows partition. He has done lots of presentations on security, Free Software, and IT political issues (such as software patents) - both for the general public and to politicians. He is best know as the person behind Parallel, the patented webshop and word processor and Remindmail He sees a completely Free phone as the most disrupting that has happened since the introduction of GNU/Linux.

Adding Urgency to Priorities
Fasting month of Ramadhan has done a lot of good for me in a practical sense. For one, I've rearranged my sleeping schedule to start the day at 5am. I kept trying last month, but it didn't seem to stick. Now I can get up at that time without needing an alarm clock. I love the Nike Awake ad. Someone told me they didn't get it. Basically at the end it's the alarm buzzer going off after showing what all the different people do to start the day at the crack of dawn before you wake up. Switch sahur with a proper large breakfast to start the day and it's all good.
Fasting is also tiring. This makes me depend even more on my organizer to keep things in focus. If you're tired you let one thing slip, then the next.. and to catch up you get tired, let more things slip and the cycle repeats. True enough, I got a lot of overdue things done and also started new projects.
I've written before about prioritising tasks. In that article I didn't use urgency yet. While I'm aware of what priority items are each day, they were not attended to efficiently. A lot of small simple tasks were therefore building up, when they should be cleared first thing in the morning since they take up so little time. This resulted in a lot of priority 1's and a lot of priority 2's left undone and building up as they were never attended to even though they were trivial.
Now I also assign urgency (A,B,C,D) to tasks, on which should be done first, even to priority 2's. Now I have a second level of prioritization that allows me to more efficiently deal with tasks building up. I use them as:
A - quick task, just do it now if it's priority 1, do it quickly first for priority 2 if you find an idle moment
B - this is going to take a bit more time, probably will need to be bumped up as priority 1 and dealt with properly
I don't use C or D, too fine grained for me. For these, I leave it as priority 3 tasks.

OpenVPN Private Networks Behind Clients
I prefer portability and battery life for my notebook. As such it doesn't have much power or hard disk space for heavy duty development work. I leave this to where it runs fastest, on servers.
I also have to travel, so I still need to access my development servers from wherever I am. We have one main server (gambit), for which we run some intranet jails as virtual servers for development. Though resources on this server is limited as it is needed for production sites. I therefore use and need access to my home server (xavier).
There are no issues accessing the main server either via openvpn client to client 10.4.0.0/24 (blue), or intranet jail ips 10.1.0.0/24 (green). I can't however access intranet IPs behind other vpn clients such as my home server which houses several virtual server jails I use for development on the 10.1.1.0/24(red) home network.

The solution is right in the HOWTO under "Including multiple machines on the client side when using a routed VPN (dev tun)".
A bit of cut and paste and variable substitution and I'm good to access my virtual servers on the 10.1.1.0/24 network on my home machine from wherever I am.
Files in subversion
Recently I've also moved my documents and files into subversion also, which I store on my home server which has a raid-1 setup. This not just allows me the freedom to work from my notebook or desktop, but also to make sure that I always have backups and revisions in a safe place. And if for whatever reason, things get hosed on my laptop, I can always reinstall, checkout and I'm good to go.
FOSS.my - This is our awesome!
Are you working on your little bit of awesome?
Before I clean it up and things may be slightly hidden in other pages, add your talks (or talks you'd like to see) and ideas at the FOSS.my event page now.

FOSS.my IRC Meet Take Two
Better publicity this time.
We're going to have an IRC meet this Monday Sept 22nd at 9:30pm at #myoss on freenode.
It's to discuss the organization of FOSS.my community event on Nov 8th Saturday.
FOSS.my is a FOSS community event based on http://linux.conf.au and http://FOSS.in. This is our first go at it, so we will start small like the others and learn from this one.
It's accessible:
- Free or very low entry fee (not more than RM10?).
- It's on Saturday so working people and students can attend
- It's easily accessible for those without cars
It's non-commercial:
- No talks by vendors trying to sell products and services
It's for knowledge sharing and FOSS development:
- A variety of different sessions
- Talks, Lightning Talks and Workshops
- Install fests
Don't entirely agree with it? It's your conference.
The wiki is here, so feel free to edit any ideas you may have.
